Mateusz Urbanowicz - cello virtuoso, graduate of the Geneva Conservatory of Music, winner of the first
price in the virtuosity class of the same Conservatory. During 4-year Postgraduate Quartet Studies in
Switzerland, conducted by the world-class quartet leader Gabor Takacs-Nagy, he gained extensive
knowledge of quartet literature, developed a unique sensibility and an attitude of tireless searching and
rediscovering the art of interpretation.
Mateusz gained his orchestral experience during years of cooperation with Orchestre de la Suisse
Romande.
He had chance to improve his virtuoso and quartet skills during numerous Master Classes conducted by,
among others: Janos Starker (Geneva), Natalie Gutman (Geneva, Stuttgart), Ralph Kirshbaum (Manchester), Gyorgy Kurtag (Lausanne), Quartetto Michelangelo (Sion), Amadeus Quartet (Geneva), Alban Berg Quartet (Paris), Lasalle Quartet (Paris).
Mateusz, plays on Angelo Sperzaga cello. He uses exclusively Pirastro gut strings. Years of experience,
comprehensive workshops and study on original baroque cello, confirm his conviction that gut strings
allow for bringing out the natural beauty and delicacy in the interpretation of string repertoire.
Mateusz's interpretations are distinguished by true originality and masterful technical skills. The most
important thing for him are: authenticity, personal approach and emotional faithfulness. Mateusz's
performances and recordings reach our hearts and delight us with a sense of freedom and great sensibility.
His interpretations demonstrate also a keen stylistic awareness.
